Most of our readers in Michigan probably know that if you’re going to go through a divorce, you will likely experience a range of emotions. Yes, there are some divorces that are amiable enough, but others involve divorcing spouses who feel resentment, bitterness and outright anger toward their soon-to-be ex-spouse.
Despite the emotions that might be involved in a divorce, women are, in fact, oftentimes happier after a divorce.
Women and divorce
As a recent news article noted, in a recent sociological study found that the women in the study felt more self-confidence and had a sense of control over their lives after a divorce. Divorced women who are mothers as well reported having better social lives, career opportunities and an overall higher level of happiness.
The report is surprising in some ways. Multiple studies have found that women’s finances tend to suffer more than men’s after a divorce. Some people might look at the financial issues and assume they mean that women would report more dissatisfaction after a divorce, but the opposite appears to be true. In fact, men tend to report greater dissatisfaction after a divorce, even if their financial situation is relatively strong.
Many people have a tendency to think of divorce only in a negative light, as the recent news article noted. It can be hard to see what positives will come out of ending a relationship that felt so committed that the couple decided to get married in the first place.
However, there is no doubt that some people feel in the months and years after a divorce that they have extricated themselves from a bad situation to a happier one.
