2 things to remember if you’re active online during a divorce

On Behalf of | Apr 14, 2025 | Divorce |

Social media is a daily activity for some people. They may scroll through other people’s posts or post things of their own. While this may seem like an innocent activity, it’s one that can cause significant issues if you’re going through a divorce.

Many people don’t realize that what they say and do on social media can be presented during the divorce. This means that being careful if you choose to remain on social media is critical.

1. Everything is permanent

It’s possible to delete posts and pictures from social media, as well as private messages, but that doesn’t mean that they’re completely erased. People can take screenshots of what you say and do. Those can make their way to your ex, so they might come up during the divorce.

2. Perception must be considered

Take the time to think about what you’re saying and doing online because things may be perceived in a way you didn’t intend. For example, posting pictures of yourself near an expensive vehicle may seem like a fun idea. Your ex may take that picture to mean that you have assets that you didn’t disclose in the divorce. It might be possible to fight that assertion by your ex, but you may have avoided the issue by not posting that photo.

You must focus on doing what’s in your best interests during the divorce, including paying close attention to all online interactions. Working with someone who can assist you with learning your options and making decisions is valuable in these matters.
