Are your summer custody plans set in stone?

On Behalf of | May 12, 2025 | Child Custody |

Michigan parents can come to dread the changes in the custody cycle that occur during the summer months. While change can indeed be destabilizing for families fractured by divorce, it’s important to plan ahead as much as possible.

The following summer custody tips for divorcing parents may be helpful for those navigating the shoals for the first time.

Draft a schedule that works for your family

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box to arrive at a summer custody schedule that reflects the needs of the entire family. If there is more than a couple of years’ difference in the kids’ ages, you may need to address the older child’s activity schedule in your custody plan.

Clear vacation plans first

Save yourself the aggravation and the financial losses of canceled plans by not making any reservations until you have broached the subject with your co-parent of traveling with the child if you do not have sole custody.

Compromise is not a bad word

It can help both co-parents reach a good place (or at least détente) to work together to ensure their children have the safest and best summer possible. Switching weekends to accommodate a family reunion or sleep-away camp is a kindness that can potentially be banked for a similar favor on your behalf.

Understand that custody plans can be modified

What once worked for five- and six-year-olds is likely not going to work for teens. Don’t try to shove square pegs into round holes. Petition the court to make the needed changes to get the custody order you need to keep up with your growing family.
